In Aviation, A Little Change Can Be Good

I wonder if you remember what you were doing back in November 2006?

Here’s a quick refresher of some of the top stories. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were getting hitched. The first hearings were taking place on The Hill to find a replacement for Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. How about the $8 billion dollar bid US Airways made to takeover Delta Air Lines then languishing in Bankruptcy. Back then, United, Continental & Northwest airlines were also in play.

Of course, I’d never met Tom Cruise or Katie Holmes, nor did I know anything about that fellow trying to get Donald Rumsfeld’s job.

But I did know something about aviation.

Here in Chicago that year, I was preparing to hit the return key on my computer and launch “Jetwhine – the blog of aviation buzz and bold opinion.” In those days blogs – or weblogs as they were known to the tech savvy – were just beginning to weave their way into the aviation industry.

Blogs gave working journalists and pilots like me an opportunity to speak up on industry topics that often see even a glimmer of a spotlight.

Five or six years later I added my friend Scott Spangler to the masthead to help out with the writing and editing duties. That turned out to be a smart move since a few years later I latched on to a full time job as senior editor at Flying magazine leaving Scott with the bulk of the effort to keep Jetwhine going.

A few years after I’d soloed in print here at Jetwhine, I tried flexing my wings with a little audio content. After years as a co-host at the Airplane Geeks, where quality sound was our mantra, I learned creating great audio content was not as easy as speaking into a microphone. So I set that part of Jetwhine aside for a while but continued listening to podcasts I enjoyed like Plane Crazy Down Under where Steve and Grant are always uncompromising about their production quality.

But now, 20 years after Jetwhine first began, I’m launching my own podcast, Stories about Flying, where I’ll dive deeply into tales from all corners of the aviation industry, stories created to educate and entertain.

I know I have some large shoes to fill in my efforts to be the best at industry storytelling, but I’m sure going to try.

And that dear readers and listeners is where you come in. I hope you’ll give the show a listen and pass it along to your friends if you enjoy it.

Stories about Flying can always be found at our website – Stories about Flying.com – but free subscriptions are also available through Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

There will of course still be print stories here at Jetwhine, but most will also include an audio component to add a fresh dimension.

I hope you enjoy this new aspect to the Jetwhine family. Your feedback is always welcome at [email protected]. And as always, thanks for reading … AND listening.
