If you follow business aviation stories, you’ve probably read about the loss of two Hawker jets – an 800XP and a 900XP – in the past two years. Both accidents evolved from similar circumstances involving pilot judgment and stirred quite a lively discussion. Although there were more than 1,700 Hawkers built over the years, this is more news about the fleet than I’ve seen in some time.

Having flown the Hawker 800, I can say tell you they’re rugged birds. Not the most handsome business jet and certainly not the fastest, but an airplane that always brought us home comfortably and in one piece.

For those of you who might be curious about the Hawker’s evolution, as well as the variety of companies that produced the aircraft, I thought you might enjoy this story about one of the first business jets that originally ran in the Turbine section of AOPA Pilot.

The Hawker line

Built like a tank, yet elegant and versatile

When the Lockheed Jetstar and the North American Sabreliner first appeared as military jet transports in the late 1950s, the de Havilland Aircraft Company in Hatfield, England, knew they’d need a jet of their own to compete in the emerging business aviation marketplace.
